Hanne Ravn Hermansen (b. 1961) was educated at the Danish Design School, in the Drawing & Graphic Arts department, graduating in June 1988, and has since supplemented her education with several graphic arts courses abroad. Flooded forests, toppled towers, brackish water, swamps, and decay serve as inspiration for Hanne Ravn Hermansen's colorful woodcut motifs. She draws inspiration from Japanese color woodblock printing techniques. She works with oil-based printing ink, which creates distinct glazing effects and which she prefers over water-based inks. The transparency of the colors is used to enhance existing hues or create new ones, depending on the thickness of the color layer. In her printing technique, she assembles and composes wooden plates so that they fit together into new motifs—either as reflections or as mosaics in a larger composition that merges into a unified expression.
